While the outlook for riding during the winter period is typically grim in the UK, the turn of the new year is an exciting time as most motorcycle manufacturers choose to unveil and launch their newest motorcycles. From the selection you guys are giving i see the Vstrom as a nice rider friendly adventure bike that will not scare new riders. Via an electronic throttle system, the rider's request is now passed on directly by a sensor on the throttle grip to the engine control and in turn the throttle valve.

They can be ridden anywhere, these bikes, on the road and off it. The idea of adventure (or allroad, roadplus and enduroad as some people are calling this style of bike) is also finding fans, with the ability to dart down a bridleway or over the plain or along a fireroad to mix up a regular road ride appealing to cyclists keen to get away from the congested streets and into the wide open countryside.

Although a number of people use smaller capacity engines (250 cc or less) personally I wouldn't recommend it. I spent the best part of two years exploring the South Island of New Zealand on a DRZ250 and although I had a fantastic time on a string of brilliant trips, the downsides of a small capacity engine had me upgrade to a larger capacity bike.

It has a very smooth-running v-twin engine and it can also handle some basic dirt roads. The motocross opportunity to hang out with a bunch of riders around the campfire in the evening, discussing the ride experience from the day, is a great ending before heading to bed.

Discovering the sport of adventure riding will be much more fun on a simple bike you don't mind putting a few scratches on. ABS has crafted tours which, wherever possible are ‘off-map', off the paved roads and designed to immerse you in an African experience.

If it were, it would have a small, light and powerful single cylinder engine, a sleek and clutter-free chassis and weight close to 120kg fully fuelled and ready to. No adventure bike on the market hits those three balls - sorry, not one. Between the Triumph Tiger and the BMW F800GS, it had to be the BMW As fun and exotic as a triple cylinder engine is, there's nothing wrong with a good old fashioned parallel twin.

A supermoto (also known as a supermotard or motard) is typically a converted motocross bike with less suspension travel, smaller front and rear wheels (typically 17" at both ends), road tires and an oversized front brake designed to be primarily run on asphalt.
